Starting something new can feel challenging, especially if you are unsure about your fitness, coordination or whether you will fit into a martial arts environment. At Kane Academy in Huddersfield, you do not need to arrive feeling confident or experienced. You simply need to take the first step.

Our 10-week beginner course costs £199 and includes your uniform, gloves and gradings, giving you the structure and support to build positive habits from the beginning. With guidance from world champion instructor Rebecca Kane, you can develop practical kickboxing skills while improving your fitness, confidence and discipline.

Over 10 weeks, you will not become an overnight expert: and you do not need to. You can, however, make meaningful progress that you can feel in your training and see in everyday life.

What is included in the 10-week beginner course?

The course is designed to help you progress in a clear, supportive way. You will receive:

  • A Kane Academy uniform, so you can train comfortably and feel part of the community.
  • Boxing gloves, allowing you to practise safely from the start.
  • Structured beginner instruction, suitable for people with little or no martial arts experience.
  • Gradings, giving you clear milestones to work towards.
  • Expert coaching, delivered in a positive environment led by experienced instructors.

The course also gives you time to repeat the basics. This is important because effective martial arts are built through consistent practice, not rushed results.

1. Build genuine confidence

Confidence is one of the first changes many beginners notice. At the beginning, you may feel nervous about learning combinations, working with a partner or exercising in front of other people. That feeling is completely normal.

As the weeks progress, you will become more familiar with the training environment. You will learn how to stand, move, punch, kick and respond to instructions. Each small improvement gives you evidence that you are capable of more than you first thought.

By the end of 10 weeks, you may be able to:

  • Walk into class with less hesitation.
  • Attempt new techniques more willingly.
  • Stay composed when a combination feels difficult.
  • Feel more comfortable training alongside others.
  • Recognise your own progress instead of focusing only on mistakes.

This confidence can extend beyond the academy. Learning to stay patient, focused and persistent during a challenging session can help you approach work, relationships and everyday obstacles with a stronger mindset.

2. Improve your fitness and stamina

Kickboxing is a full-body workout. You will use your legs, hips, core, shoulders and arms while also developing balance and coordination.

Your first sessions may leave you feeling tired quickly. That is not a sign that you are failing; it is simply your body adapting to a new type of exercise. With regular attendance, you can gradually improve your ability to work through combinations, pad rounds and conditioning exercises.

Realistic fitness improvements over 10 weeks may include:

  1. Better cardiovascular stamina
You may recover more quickly between rounds and feel less out of breath during everyday activities.

  2. Improved muscular endurance
Repeated punches, kicks, footwork and defensive movements can help your muscles work for longer.

  3. Greater balance and coordination
Kickboxing asks you to control your body while moving in different directions, which can improve body awareness.

  4. Increased mobility
Warm-ups, dynamic movement and controlled kicking can support flexibility and joint mobility.

Research into short-term kickboxing training has found improvements in aerobic fitness, power, speed, agility and flexibility after only five weeks. Results will vary from person to person, but the message is encouraging: consistent training can produce noticeable changes in a relatively short period.

You should not judge your progress by weight alone. Fitness improvements often appear before visible body-composition changes. Focus on how you move, how you recover and how much more confidently you complete each session.

3. Learn strong technical foundations

Ten weeks gives you time to move beyond simply copying movements. You can begin to understand how techniques work together.

Your beginner training may introduce you to:

  • Basic stance and guard.
  • Footwork and movement.
  • Straight punches, hooks and uppercuts.
  • Front kicks and roundhouse kicks.
  • Pad work and simple combinations.
  • Defensive movements.
  • Basic self-defence principles.
  • Training etiquette and partner control.

At first, remembering a combination may feel difficult. With repetition, the movements become more natural. You begin to focus less on what comes next and more on accuracy, timing and control.

Good technique is not about hitting as hard as possible. It is about developing efficient movement, maintaining your guard, listening to your coach and practising safely. These foundations will support every stage of your future martial arts journey.

4. Develop discipline through consistency

Motivation can help you attend your first few sessions, but consistency is what creates long-term progress.

A 10-week course gives you a clear timeframe and a practical goal. Instead of wondering whether you are improving, you can focus on attending, practising and completing the next session.

To get the most from your course:

  • Attend consistently. Regular practice helps techniques and fitness improvements build over time.
  • Arrive prepared. Give yourself enough time to change, hydrate and settle before class.
  • Listen carefully. Good coaching becomes more effective when you stay focused on instructions.
  • Accept corrections. Feedback is not criticism; it is a tool that helps you improve safely.
  • Recover properly. Sleep, hydration and sensible nutrition support your training.
  • Celebrate small wins. Completing a difficult combination or lasting longer in a round is meaningful progress.

Discipline does not mean being perfect. It means returning to the process, even when progress feels gradual.

5. Find a welcoming community

Martial arts can be a deeply social experience. You train with people who may have different ages, backgrounds and fitness levels, but everyone shares the same opportunity to improve.

At Kane Academy, personal development is at the heart of training. The environment is family-friendly, inclusive and supportive, whether you are completely new to exercise, returning after a break or already active in another sport.

You can expect to work with training partners, encourage others and develop mutual respect. Over time, familiar faces can become an important source of motivation. The community helps you remember that you are not working towards your goals alone.

This is also why you do not need to be a stereotypical martial artist to belong. All ages and fitness levels are welcome, and your starting point does not define your potential.

What could your final week look like?

By week 10, your progress may look different from someone else’s. You may be completing combinations more smoothly, feeling fitter during pad work or becoming more confident when learning a new technique.

You may also be ready to work towards a grading milestone. The included gradings provide a positive opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned and recognise your commitment.

Most importantly, you should finish the course with a clearer understanding of what your body and mind can achieve through regular effort. You will have developed skills that can continue growing long after the 10 weeks have finished.
