If you are over 40 and thinking about getting fitter, you may also be wondering whether your knees will cope, whether your back will play up, or whether you will have enough energy to keep going. Perhaps you do not want to join a gym, only to be left on your own with unfamiliar equipment.
You have not missed your chance. Kickboxing can offer a motivating, coached way to move, learn new skills and build confidence at a pace that suits you. At Kane Academy, the over-40s programme is open to both men and women, and you do not need previous martial arts experience to begin.
A fresh start does not have to mean an intimidating workout
Starting exercise again can feel like a big step, especially if you have been away from regular activity for a while. A supportive class gives you structure, clear guidance and other people to train alongside, without expecting you to arrive already fit.
Kane Academy’s over-40s students train alongside the teen and adult group on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:15–8:00pm. Sessions are coached by world champion instructor Rebecca Kane, with a focus on helping students develop their skills and fitness progressively. Every new member can try a trial session before deciding whether the class feels right for them.
Whether you are coming from Marsh, Lindley, Salendine Nook, Oakes, Fixby, Greenhead or elsewhere in Huddersfield and Kirklees, you will find a local martial arts community where personal development matters as much as physical training.

How kickboxing can help you rebuild strength, balance and confidence
Kickboxing combines movement, coordination and technique. Depending on the session and your starting point, you may practise footwork, punches, kicks and partner or pad drills. A coach can help you learn the movement, break skills into manageable steps and adjust how you take part.
Here are some ways training may support your goals:
-
Build strength through movement. Punching, kicking and maintaining a balanced stance ask your body to work in different ways. Kickboxing can contribute to general strength and muscular endurance, although it does not automatically replace dedicated strength training.
-
Practise balance and coordination. Stepping, changing stance and responding to a coach’s cues all challenge your coordination. Learning these movements gradually can help you feel more capable and controlled.
-
Improve fitness at a manageable pace. A class gets you moving, but you can start by focusing on technique and taking breaks when needed. You do not have to match another person’s speed or intensity.
-
Gain confidence by learning a skill. Progress is not just about how hard or fast you can train. Remembering a combination, improving your stance or feeling more comfortable in class are meaningful achievements.
Research on kickboxing and older adults offers encouraging, but measured, findings. A 12-week group programme involving adults aged 50–85 reported improvements in some measures of strength and physical function, though it did not increase muscle mass (study in Nutrients). Another small study of adults aged 60–80 found improvements in several fitness and balance measures in both kickboxing-enhanced and conventional strength-and-balance groups (study overview). These findings suggest kickboxing can be one enjoyable way to be active, not a guaranteed result or a substitute for every kind of exercise.

Worried about your knees, back or energy? Start by speaking up
Being cautious does not mean you are not ready. It means you are paying attention to your body. Before you start, tell your instructor about any concerns, past injuries or movements you find difficult. A good coach needs that information to help you approach training thoughtfully.
Try these practical steps:
- Begin with technique, not power. Focus on learning the movements with control before adding speed or force. This helps you build confidence in how your body moves.
- Keep movements comfortable. You can ask how to adapt a drill or reduce its range of motion. Do not push through sharp pain or ignore symptoms that feel unusual.
- Take breaks when needed. Your fitness will develop over time. Pausing to catch your breath is a sensible way to manage effort, not a failure.
- Ask before attempting a new drill. If you are unsure about a movement or partner exercise, check with your coach first.
- Seek medical advice when appropriate. If you have a health condition, significant pain, a recent injury or a long break from exercise, speak with a healthcare professional before starting.
No class can promise that exercise will be right for every person or every joint. The important thing is to communicate, listen to your body and progress at your own pace. You are not expected to arrive knowing what to do.
Coaching makes the difference
One of the biggest advantages of martial arts training is that you are not left to work everything out alone. Rebecca Kane is a champion trainer with extensive martial arts and coaching experience. Kane Academy also describes its instructors as DBS-checked and first-aid trained, and its female-led environment helps make training feel welcoming to adults of different backgrounds and experience levels.
You will be learning with qualified martial arts teachers who can explain techniques and offer guidance as you develop. For many people, that personal attention is more motivating than exercising alone. You can ask questions, take your time and celebrate small wins along the way.

Find a class that fits your life
The weekday Teen & Adult Kickboxing sessions run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:15–8:00pm. If you would rather share your training with family, the Family Kickboxing session is on Saturdays from 12:15–1:00pm. It is listed as a mixed session for teenagers and families, so check with the academy if you would like to confirm the best option for your circumstances.

Your next step can be a trial
You do not have to be at peak fitness, know the techniques or feel completely confident before you walk through the door. You only need to be willing to try. The over-40s programme welcomes men and women, and every new member can book a trial session to experience the coaching and atmosphere for themselves.
If you live in Huddersfield or nearby in West Yorkshire and want more guidance than a gym can offer, consider taking that first step. Give yourself time, focus on steady progress and discover what you can achieve when you have the right support.
