Starting a martial arts journey is often a mix of excitement and "can I actually do this?" nerves.
Whether you are a parent looking to build your child's confidence or an adult wanting to reclaim your fitness and focus, the first step is always the biggest.
At Kane Academy in Huddersfield, we have spent years perfecting our beginner experience. We don’t just throw you into the deep end; we guide you through a structured, 10-week journey designed to transform you from a complete novice into a confident, graded martial artist.
In this post, we’re pulling back the curtain on exactly what happens during those ten weeks. From the moment you put on your brand-new uniform to the proud day you receive your first belt, here is what your journey at Kane Academy looks like.
The Foundation: Your Starter Kit
Before you even step on the mats for your first official lesson of the course, we make sure you are fully equipped for success. Our 10-week beginner course is an all-inclusive investment of £199.
This isn't just for the tuition; we provide everything you need to feel like part of the team from day one:
- Your Official Uniform: A high-quality martial arts uniform (Orange for our Tiny Tigers, Blue for Ninja Kids and Adults).
- Professional Gloves: Your own pair of boxing gloves for pad work and drills.
- Grading Fees: Your final assessment and first belt are already covered.
By providing the gear upfront, we remove the "what do I wear?" anxiety, allowing you to focus entirely on your personal development.
Weeks 1–2: Orientation and Foundations
The first two weeks are all about finding your feet, literally. Under the world-class instruction of Rebecca Kane, you will learn the fundamental pillars of kickboxing and martial arts.

What you’ll learn:
- The Stance: How to stand with balance and stability. This helps build a "strong base" that translates to confidence in everyday life.
- The Guard: Learning how to protect yourself. In martial arts, safety always comes first.
- Basic Strikes: You’ll master the "Jab" and the "Cross." These are the building blocks of all kickboxing combinations.
- Etiquette: You’ll learn the "Bow" and our academy values of respect and kindness.
The Transformation: By the end of week two, the "newness" wears off. You’ll start to recognize the rhythms of the class, and your muscles will begin to adapt to the new movements.
Weeks 3–5: Building Momentum and Fitness
Now that the basics are set, we turn up the energy. This is where you start to feel the "martial arts glow."
What you’ll learn:
- Leg Work: Introduction to the front kick and basic footwork patterns. This improves coordination and mobility significantly.
- Pad Work: You’ll put those new gloves to use! Hitting the pads is an incredible stress reliever. It helps you develop accuracy and power without the need for sparring.
- Conditioning: We incorporate functional fitness drills designed to boost your heart health and stamina.
The Transformation: This is often where students notice their energy levels skyrocketing. Parents of our Tiny Tigers (ages 4–7) and Ninja Kids (ages 7–12) often tell us their children are sleeping better and showing more focus at school by this stage.
Weeks 6–8: Refinement and Resilience
Weeks six through eight are the "bridge" to becoming a martial artist. The focus shifts from learning what to do to how to do it with excellence.

What you’ll learn:
- Combinations: Putting punches and kicks together into seamless flows. This enhances "executive function" and mental sharpness.
- Self-Defence Scenarios: Practical applications of your skills. For adults, this means situational awareness; for kids, it’s about anti-bullying and setting boundaries.
- The Mindset: We focus heavily on resilience. If a technique is hard, we don't give up: we "black belt it" until we get it right.
The Transformation: You are no longer "trying" martial arts; you are doing it. Your uniform feels like a second skin, and your confidence is visible in your posture and the way you carry yourself outside the academy.
Week 9: The Pre-Grading Review
Week nine is a dress rehearsal. We call this the "Confidence Check." We review the entire syllabus you’ve learned over the past two months to ensure you are ready for the big day.
What happens:
- Syllabus Review: We walk through every strike, block, and movement required for your first grade.
- Feedback: Instructors provide individual pointers to sharpen your technique.
- Mental Preparation: We talk about managing "grading nerves" and turning that nervous energy into focus.
The Transformation: The realization hits: you know more than you thought you did. The fear of the unknown is replaced by the excitement of achievement.
Week 10: Grading Day – The Moment of Success
Grading Day is a celebration of your hard work. It is a formal assessment where you demonstrate your skills to the instructors and, most importantly, to yourself.

The Experience:
The atmosphere is electric. Whether you are an adult in our Over 40s programme or a parent watching your child, the feeling of pride when the new belt is tied around the waist is incomparable.
What you earn:
- Your First Belt: Usually a White Belt or a specific beginner stripe, signifying your official entry into the martial arts ranks.
- A Certificate of Achievement: A physical reminder of the discipline you’ve shown.
- A New Identity: You are no longer a "beginner": you are a graded student of Kane Academy.
Why 10 Weeks?
Scientific research suggests that it takes roughly 66 days to form a new habit. Our 10-week structure (70 days) is intentionally designed to move beyond a "trial" and into a lifestyle change. By the time you reach grading day, martial arts isn't just something you do on a Tuesday night; it’s a part of who you are.

Unleash Your Inner Warrior
At Kane Academy, we believe that martial arts is for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. Our 10-week course isn't just about learning how to kick and punch; it’s about building a version of yourself that is more resilient, more confident, and more connected to a supportive community.
