Starting something new can feel exciting, challenging and slightly intimidating. You may be wondering whether you are fit enough, experienced enough or confident enough to begin kickboxing.
At Kane Academy, you do not need to arrive as an athlete. You simply need the willingness to take the first step.
Our 10-week beginner kickboxing course in Huddersfield is designed to help you build confidence, fitness, discipline, resilience and practical martial arts skills in a welcoming environment. The focus is not simply on fighting. It is on personal development, healthy living and helping you become stronger in every area of life.
The £199 beginner course includes your uniform, gloves and gradings, giving you everything you need to begin your martial arts journey with confidence.
Why choose a beginner kickboxing course?
A structured course gives you a clear starting point and a supportive path to follow. Instead of walking into an unfamiliar gym and wondering what to do, you receive expert instruction, progressive training and achievable goals.
Kane Academy welcomes all ages and fitness levels, including complete beginners. Whether your goal is to improve your health, learn self-defence, make new friends or develop greater self-belief, each session is designed to help you progress at your own pace.
You will train under the guidance of Rebecca Kane, a world champion instructor, alongside a team committed to encouragement, respect and continuous improvement.
Research into martial arts-based training has linked regular participation with improvements in physical fitness, psychological wellbeing and self-confidence. The key takeaway is simple: consistent training can help you feel stronger both physically and mentally.
What to expect during your 10-week journey
Every student develops differently, but your course will generally progress through several stages. Each stage builds on the last, helping you develop skills without feeling overwhelmed.
Weeks 1–2: Learn the foundations
The first few weeks are about becoming comfortable in the training environment and learning the fundamentals.
You can expect to practise:
- Your basic stance and guard.
- Safe movement and footwork.
- Fundamental punches and kicks.
- Pad-holding and partner exercises.
- Warm-ups, mobility work and cool-downs.
- Basic martial arts etiquette and class routines.
Do not worry if the movements feel unfamiliar at first. Your instructors will demonstrate each technique clearly and give you time to practise. Focus on learning one skill at a time rather than trying to be perfect immediately.
This helps you build a strong foundation while developing coordination, concentration and confidence.

Weeks 3–4: Build fitness and coordination
Once you understand the basics, your training will begin to feel more active and dynamic. You will combine techniques into simple sequences and complete exercises designed to improve your stamina, strength and coordination.
Sessions may include:
- Technique practice on pads.
- Bodyweight exercises.
- Footwork drills.
- Core and balance exercises.
- Combination work.
- Controlled partner activities.
You will probably notice that your breathing, balance and movement improve as the weeks progress. You may also find that everyday activities feel easier because your body is becoming more capable.
Remember that fitness develops gradually. Work at an appropriate level, listen to your instructor and celebrate improvement rather than comparing yourself with others.
By training consistently, you give your body the opportunity to adapt and your confidence the chance to grow.
Weeks 5–6: Develop discipline and focus
Kickboxing requires more than physical effort. You must listen carefully, remember combinations and stay focused while moving.
This stage of the course encourages you to develop:
- Better concentration.
- Self-control.
- Patience.
- Commitment.
- Time management.
- A positive response to challenges.
These qualities are valuable beyond the academy. The discipline you develop through regular training can support your work, family life and other personal goals.
Set yourself small targets, such as remembering a combination, attending consistently or improving one technique. Small achievements create momentum and help you recognise how far you have already come.
Kickboxing is not just about fighting
Many people begin martial arts because they want to improve their fitness or learn self-defence. Those are important benefits, but they are only part of the journey.
At Kane Academy, training is centred on personal development. You will learn how to stay calm under pressure, keep working when something feels difficult and treat others with respect.
You will not be expected to fight or spar before you are ready. Beginners are introduced to skills progressively, with safety, control and confidence at the heart of each lesson.
A review of research into martial arts and combat sports has highlighted the potential benefits of structured training for physical health, self-regulation and psychological wellbeing. You can read more in this research review on martial arts and health.
Weeks 7–8: Grow resilience and self-belief
By the seventh and eighth weeks, you may begin to notice changes that reach beyond your fitness.
You might feel:
- More comfortable trying unfamiliar things.
- More confident speaking and participating.
- Better able to manage stress.
- Proud of completing challenging sessions.
- More resilient when progress feels slow.
- Motivated to continue working towards your goals.
Resilience does not mean every session feels easy. It means learning how to respond when something is difficult. You may miss a combination, feel tired or struggle with a new movement. Your role is to reset, listen and try again.
Each time you continue after a setback, you strengthen the mindset that helps you achieve success in other areas of life.

Weeks 9–10: Prepare for progression
The final weeks give you the opportunity to bring your learning together. You will revise key techniques, practise combinations and prepare for the next stage of your martial arts journey.
Your instructors will help you understand:
- How your techniques have developed.
- Which areas you should continue to practise.
- How grading works.
- What your next goals could be.
- How to continue training with confidence.
The course includes gradings, giving you a meaningful opportunity to demonstrate your progress. A grading is not about competing against other students. It is about recognising your effort, preparation and development.
Completing a 10-week course is an achievement in itself. Whether you go on to train regularly, work towards higher grades or simply enjoy the health benefits of kickboxing, you will have proved that you can commit to a new challenge.

What should you bring to your first session?
You do not need to be fit before you start. Wear comfortable clothing, bring water and arrive with an open mind.
During your first session:
- Arrive a little early. This gives you time to meet the team and ask questions.
- Tell your instructor that you are new. They will guide you through the session and offer suitable options.
- Focus on technique before intensity. Good movement matters more than trying to work as hard as possible.
- Ask for help when you need it. Questions are a normal and valuable part of learning.
- Celebrate participation. Turning up is already a powerful first step.
New members can book a trial session before making a longer-term commitment. This allows you to experience the academy, meet the instructors and decide whether the environment feels right for you.
