The clocks have gone back, daylight is shorter and the evenings feel darker. If you notice your motivation dipping as November settles in, you are not alone. Colder weather and busy end-of-year plans can make it harder to keep moving and make time for yourself.
A weekly kickboxing class offers a positive reason to step out, get active and focus on what you can do. At Kane Academy, our women’s kickboxing session is designed to be welcoming, supportive and suitable for different ages and fitness levels. It can help you build a routine, learn practical skills and leave each session feeling that you have done something for yourself.
Here are three ways a dedicated women-only session can help brighten the darker months.
1. Move your body and lift your November routine
When it is dark outside, staying in can feel like the easiest option. But an enjoyable activity that is already in your diary can make it simpler to get moving, even when motivation is low.
Kickboxing combines movement, technique and pad work in a structured class. You can focus on learning one skill at a time, while the changing drills help keep each session purposeful. You do not need to arrive fit or experienced: start at your own pace, listen to your instructor and build your confidence gradually.
Research supports physical activity as one helpful part of looking after your mental wellbeing. An umbrella review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that exercise can improve symptoms of depression, anxiety and psychological distress. That research is about activity in general, not proof that kickboxing prevents seasonal low mood, but it does reinforce the value of finding a way to move that you enjoy. The NHS also recommends regular physical activity as part of caring for your mental health.
A class is also a useful pause in a month that can start to feel full. For 45 minutes, you can concentrate on your breathing, footwork and combinations rather than your to-do list. You will train alongside other women in a supportive, female-friendly environment, not be left alone to figure out an intimidating gym floor.
Try this: Put one session in your calendar and prepare your kit in advance. Making the plan concrete means you do not have to wait for motivation to appear before you get started.
2. Build practical skills and feel more composed after dark
Walking to the car, bus stop or home on a dark evening can feel different from making the same journey in daylight. Kickboxing gives you a structured way to practise movement, balance, striking techniques and staying composed under instruction. As your skills develop, you may feel more assured in your body and more aware of how you move through space.
That confidence matters, but it is important to be clear: kickboxing training is a foundation, not a replacement for dedicated self-defence education, and no class can guarantee safety. Everyday precautions still matter. Stay aware of your surroundings, choose well-lit routes where possible, keep your phone accessible and trust your instincts if a situation feels uncomfortable.
Kane Academy also runs specialised women’s self-defence sessions, so you can explore focused learning beyond the techniques practised in kickboxing. Our classes are taught by world champion instructor Rebecca Kane, with guidance that helps you learn progressively and practise with care.

Try this: As you practise, focus on posture, balance and listening carefully to instruction, not on being perfect. Repeating a movement in a supportive setting helps you become more familiar with it and can strengthen your confidence over time.
3. Give yourself one hour before the December rush
In the run-up to December, work, family plans and seasonal commitments can quickly take over your calendar. A regular class gives you a small but meaningful appointment that belongs to you. It is not an indulgence; it is a practical way to protect time for your health, learning and personal growth.
At Kane Academy, the women’s kickboxing session is on Saturday from 11:30am to 12:15pm. If another time suits you better, Teen & Adult Kickboxing runs on Tuesday and Thursday from 7:15pm to 8:00pm. Check the full Kane Academy timetable before attending, as class details may change.
If you have children, Saturday classes run throughout the morning too: Tiny Tigers at 9:00–9:30am and 9:30–10:00am, followed by Ninja Kids at 10:00–10:45am and 10:45–11:30am. Family Kickboxing is scheduled for 12:15–1:00pm. The timetable lists the women’s class for ages 12+; check the full timetable for current details and suitability before you attend.
A predictable weekly session can make it easier to keep showing up. You do not have to transform your routine all at once: make one commitment, learn a little, and let consistency do its work. Over time, those sessions can add up to stronger skills, greater fitness and a sense of achievement that carries beyond the mats.
A welcoming first step, whatever your starting point
You might be returning to exercise after a long break, completely new to martial arts or simply looking for a friendlier alternative to a conventional gym. You are welcome to begin at your current level. Our classes reflect Kane Academy’s values of healthy living, kindness, resilience, inclusivity and continuous growth.
You can find out more about women’s kickboxing and ask about a trial session before deciding what is right for you. There are also two ways to start a longer learning journey:
- 4-week starter programme: £49.99, a chance to try the programme and build familiarity with the basics.
- 6-week beginner course: £199, includes a uniform, gloves and gradings.
You do not need to wait until you feel fitter, more confident or fully prepared. Beginners are welcome, and your first step can be as simple as getting in touch and asking a question.
Make this November your fresh start
Dark evenings do not have to mean putting your goals on hold. A supportive kickboxing class can give you a reason to move, an opportunity to practise practical skills and a regular hour to protect for yourself before the December rush.
If you live in Huddersfield or nearby Marsh, Lindley, Salendine Nook, Oakes, Fixby or Greenhead, consider joining us on the mats. Book a trial, check the timetable before you attend, and take the first step towards brighter confidence: one session at a time.
